Vol. 124 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Destruction by Seals.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that the presence of seals in Cromane Harbour, County Kerry, is responsible for the wholesale destruction of salmon within that area to the detriment of the fishermen operating there; and, if so, whether he will request the co-operation of the Minister for Defence in the destruction of such seals by supplying the local battalion, F.C.A., with explosive bullets as used heretofore and thereby give immunity from such a destructive pest to the local fishermen while according ideal constructive training to those members of our Army.

I am not aware that seals cause wholesale destruction of salmon in Cromane Harbour. The Kerry Board of Conservators is prepared to pay £1 for each seal destroyed in the Kerry fishery district and this reward should encourage the local people to engage in the destruction of these animals where they are a menace to fisheries.
