Vol. 124 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bacon Prices.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that many bacon curers are now delivering bacon to retailers in ribless, hamless sides although on 2nd December, 1951, it was not the general practice so to remove the ribs before delivery and that as a result the actual increase on ribless sides is approximately 14/- per cwt.; and, if so, whether he will consider taking steps to prevent this ingenious method of evading the recent Prices and Charges (Standstill) Order, 1951.

I am aware that some curers are now selling bacon under descriptions which have hitherto not been recognised in the bacon trade. It is assumed that this course has been adopted in an effort to circumvent the terms of the Prices and Charges (Standstill) Order, 1951.

The Deputy will be aware that, in reply to a question regarding bacon prices earlier in the week, I stated that the whole matter was under consideration and that I hoped to be in a position to make an announcement at an early date.
