Vol. 124 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Motor Accidents.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the number of fatal accidents arising from motors being driven into unprotected waterways, he will take steps to have all such waterways adjoining public roads protected by railings and warning notices.

A certain amount of local action has already been taken on this matter. I am considering the issue of advice to road authorities generally as to the desirability of their examining the position in their respective areas to see to what extent the provision of better lighting, railings or other protective measures at danger spots is necessary and feasible. I may add that it is the practice at present for both the Commissioner of the Garda Síochána and my Department to draw the attention of road authorities to any particular cases which come to their notice.
