Rations at an approximate present cost of 2/6 a day are ordinarily issued to soldiers. An allowance in lieu of rations at the rate of 2/9 per diem is, however, payable to a non-commissioned officer or private on the married establishment not provided with married quarters. This allowance is also payable to a non-commissioned officer or private on leave and to a non-commissioned officer or private to whom in exceptional circumstances rations in kind cannot be issued. The cash value of rations (2/6 per diem) is payable to a married non-commissioned officer or private, whether on the married establishment or not, who at his own request is removed from the ration strength.
The assessed cost of accommodation, clothing, medical treatment and private travelling facilities provided free of charge for soldiers of the forces is approximately 18/2 per week.
The prescribed allotments from the pay of married non-commissioned officers and privates on the married establishment and the allowances in respect of the wife and/or children are as follows:—
