Vol. 125 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Appeal for Tillage Crops.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state if he has received any reports from his officials as to the response by the farmers of the Republic of Ireland to his appeal to grow more wheat, oats, barley and potatoes and also to the sugar company's appeal to grow more beet; and, if so, the nature of the reports.

It is too early yet to give any reliable indication as to what acreages of the various crops are likely to be sown this year. The unfavourable weather which has prevailed up to now has prevented any large amount of tillage being carried out, but I hope that in the weeks between now and the end of the sowing season farmers will make up for lost time and that the increased production of crops so urgently necessary may yet be achieved.
