Vol. 125 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fertiliser Bags.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state whether there is a shortage of jute bags for containing fertilisers, and, if so, the practical steps being taken to overcome the shortage.

There is at present a shortage of second-hand jute sacks of the type used for containing fertilisers, largely because of a world shortage of new jute sacks and cloth. Requirements are met to a limited extent by the use of paper sacks.

In co-operation with the sack merchants, the fertiliser manufacturers are endeavouring to secure the return of such fertiliser sacks as could be reconditioned for further use. Unfavourable weather conditions have, however, delayed the spreading of fertilisers, with a consequent delay in the return of sacks.
