Vol. 125 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Soldiers' and Sailors' Trust.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will cause to be published the terms of the proposals about to be agreed to with the British Soldiers' and Sailors' Trust regarding their occupants' fixity of tenure in the trust's houses in Ireland, and if he will safeguard the tenancies of the families of tenants who die in occupation.

I am not yet in a position to make a statement in regard to the terms of the proposals affecting the trust. These proposals will involve legislation both here and in Great Britain, and this aspect is at present being considered by the British Government. A public statement will be made in the matter at the earliest practicable date.

Mr. Byrne

Will the Minister, before there is any agreement entered into, examine the documents and see there will be no eviction of widows and dependents of ex-soldiers who are tenants? If there is such a proposal and the Minister sees it, it will be a matter for him to try and get the eviction proposals eliminated and thus protect the existing tenants and their dependents.
