Vol. 125 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Salaries of Ministers and Parliamentary Secretaries.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the number of occasions between 1st January, 1932, and 18th February, 1948, on which the salaries of Ministers and Parliamentary Secretaries were increased and the amount of such increases.

The salaries of Ministers and Parliamentary Secretaries were decreased once and increased twice between 1st January, 1932, and 18th February, 1948. The amounts of the salary changes are indicated in a table which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to have published in the Official Report.

The details are as follows:—

These salaries, except for the equivalent of the Oireachtas allowance included in them, are subject to income-tax. During the period 9th March, 1932, to 20th July, 1937, however, the reduced salaries then in operation were entirely exempt from income-tax.

The Oireachtas allowance now amounts to £624 per annum in the case of a Deputy and to £468 per annum in the case of a Senator.
