Vol. 125 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - West Cork Forestry Development.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will indicate the forestry development proposed for West Cork, the extent of the employment which will be given and the sum of money which will be expended.

There are at present four forestry centres in West Cork:—

Macroom

2,300 acres

Inchigeelagh

370 acres

Dunmanway

1,319 acres

Bandon

926 acres

Some 467 acres remain to be planted in these centres. The number of men at present employed there is 40 and their wages for a year would amount to £7,500.

Agreement was reached last year for the purchase of a further area of 656 acres. In addition it is hoped to issue offers at an early date for the purchase of a further 97 acres which have been inspected. Further areas offered to the forestry division, totalling 1,660 acres, are listed for inspection and will be inspected as soon as the inspectors can reach them.

The Deputy will realise that as the purchase of land is subject to factors not within my control I am unable to state definitely what developments will take place in the future.
