Vol. 125 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Conditions on Aran Islands.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware of the unsatisfactory conditions which obtain on the Aran Islands in connection with food and fuel supplies and also transport facilities; and, if so, whether he is prepared to have the whole problem investigated with a view to remedying the position.

With a view to maintaining a regular steamer service between Galway and the Aran Islands arrangements are in train for the transfer of the service to Córas Iompair Éireann. It is anticipated that the transfer, when effected, will provide a solution of the transport difficulties.

I am aware that difficulty regarding supplies of turf arose on the Aran Islands during the past winter. To meet the position, arrangements were made to have 300 tons of machine-won turf sent to the islands by Bord na Móna. I understand that arrangements are being made to have the question of fuel supplies for the Aran Islands examined in connection with the Connemara development scheme. I am not aware of any other supply difficulties on the islands.

Would the Minister say when it is expected that the Aran transport service will be incorporated into Córas Iompair Éireann? This matter of taking it over has been on foot for a considerable time and it ought now be possible to report progress. Will the Minister say what the position is?

Perhaps the Deputy could assist in the matter. The position is that when we arrived at the date on which it was hoped and proposed to take it over, the Galway company went into litigation and the matter is now before the courts. I have no authority to hurry the courts.
