Vol. 125 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Building Materials.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he has received any estimate of the approximate quantity of building materials required for the construction annually of 3,000 corporation houses in the Dublin City area, together with an estimate of the principal materials required for the development of the necessary sites therefor, and if he has any statement to make thereon regarding (a) the giving of priority to the local authority for the material specified; (b) the over-all position in connection with building material generally, and (c) whether any examination has been carried out concerning the possibility of expansion in the production of such of the commodities specified, as are produced or manufactured within the State.

I have not received the estimates of requirements of building materials referred to in the question.

I am not satisfied that it would be either necessary or desirable at the present juncture to introduce any system of priorities for the purchase of building materials.

The whole position regarding supplies of essential materials for industry, including the building industry, is being kept under constant review in consultation with the normal suppliers or producers of such materials with a view to ensuring that the maximum possible supplies are available for users.
