Vol. 125 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - New School in Offaly.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state if the contract has been placed for the erection of the new school at Killavalla, Roscrea, Offaly.

The answer is in the negative.

The planning of the proposed new school depends upon the adequacy of a water supply for drinking and sanitation purposes, in regard to which there is not yet sufficient information. The Offaly County Council decided some time ago to provide a pump adjacent to the site but, I am advised, this work has not yet been undertaken.

In view of the undertaking given recently in this House by the Minister for Education and the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Finance, that no time would be lost in carrying out the erection of a new school at Killavilla, Roscrea, could the Minister now state what is the reason that the work has not been carried out?

The building of the new school depends upon an adequate water supply in the area. The Offaly County Council decided some time ago to provide a pump adjacent to the site but this work has not been put in hand.

Am I to understand that Offaly County Council, through their neglect in failing to erect a pump, is responsible for the non-erection of the new school at Killavilla, and that, if the Offaly County Council erect a pump, every haste and speed will be used by the Board of Works and the Department of Education in erecting the school?

I take it that that is so.
