Vol. 125 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Old I.R.A. Pensions.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state whether he will introduce proposals for legislation at an early date to increase the pensions of members of the Old Irish Republican Army so as to enable them to meet the increase in the cost of living.

I do not propose to introduce legislation with a view to increasing the pensions referred to in the Deputy's question.

Mr. Byrne

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that most of these men are between 60 and 65 years of age and, because of that, are not in a position to retain employment or to get new employment? In view of that hardship, will he give the matter further consideration?

I will convey the Deputy's remarks to the Minister.
