Vol. 125 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clifden Electricity Services.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the present position in relation to the proposed extension of the Electricity Supply Board's service to Clifden.

I am informed by the Electricity Supply Board that an official canvass has been carried out in Clifden and, while the percentage of acceptances is good, the distance of Clifden from the nearest point of supply renders the over-all economic returns unsatisfactory. The matter of supply to the more remote regions along the western seaboard generally is one which is receiving the special consideration of the Electricity Supply Board at the present time, but no indication can be given at this stage as to the decision that may be taken.

Would the Minister say if that reply means that the application for a rural electrification scheme in Clifden is being turned down?

The reply means exactly what it says.

It is not very clear to me.

I cannot clarify the Deputy's mind.
