Vol. 125 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Laoighis Drainage Scheme.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state whether the Laoighis County Council submitted to his Department a proposal under the Local Authorities (Works) Act for drainage work at Clonduff, Searybeg and Tinnahinch; and, if so, the decision reached with regard to it and, if no decision has been reached, whether he is able to indicate when the council will be in a position to furnish to his Department all the information necessary to enable a decision to be taken with regard to this urgent drainage work.

An outline proposal on the lines mentioned by the Deputy has been submitted by the Laoighis County Council under the Local Authorities (Works) Act, 1949, but pending detailed examination by the council of its feasibility, a final decision cannot be given thereon. I am not in a position to say when the council will be able to furnish the results of their further consideration of the proposal.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary say whether the local authority, the Laoighis County Council, has furnished to his Department all the information necessary to enable a decision to be arrived at?

They have not as yet furnished the information that has been requested by the Department.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary say that they will be pressed to give that information?

They have been.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware of the fact that the members of the Laoighis County Council have never to be told their duties, that if there is any complaint it may be from the clerical or engineering staff but that, as far as the members of the council are concerned, they do their job thoroughly and well irrespective of Party or political affiliations?

This information was not asked for from the chairman or individual members of the Laoighis County Council. It was asked for from their engineering section. A survey is required that has not yet been furnished.

The members of the council are out of that question completely.
