Vol. 125 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mother and Child Health Benefit Scheme.

asked the Minister for Health if he will permit city and county medical officers of health or their selected representatives to take part in the consultations in his Department preparatory to the drafting of the revised mother and child health benefit scheme, in view of the fact that he has so invited representatives of the Irish Medical Association and of the fact that local authorities will take a large part in the administration of the scheme.

I am very anxious to secure the widest possible co-operation and assistance from all quarters in the preparation of a revised mother and child scheme and I am satisfied that city and county medical officers of health can, by reason of their experience both in the clinical field and in regard to local authority administration, make very useful contributions.

It is my intention to give full opportunity to various interested bodies, including representatives and officials of local authorities, to make suggestions in regard to the draft scheme before any final decisions are taken, and in that way it will be possible for city and county medical officers to express their views in regard to it and to make any suggestions they may think fit. I need hardly say that any such suggestions will be given the most careful consideration and that full use will be made of the very valuable assistance which the officers in question are in a position to give.
