Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Widows' and Orphans' Pensions

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will (1) give his estimate of the cost of widows' and orphans' pensions on the assumption that each widow qualifies for 24/- per week and for 7/- per week for each of the first two children under 16 years of age subject to a means test as follows:—(a) if her husband was in an insurable occupation—no means test; (b) if her husband was a farmer and owner of a holding less than £25 poor law valuation—no means test, and (c) in all other cases if her income is less than £100 per annum—no means test and (2) state the amount paid out in non-contributory widows' and orphans' pensions for the last financial year.

The required figures in relation to widows are:—(1) £4,250,000 and (2) £915,000.
