Vol. 125 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Finglas School Site.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that a site for new schools at Finglas new housing area which will cater for 2,000 families, has not yet been made available for the parish manager; and, if so, if he will see that a site is made available without delay so that the school may be ready at the same time as the houses are ready for occupation.

Arrangements for the provision of school accommodation for the children of the new housing area at Finglas are receiving the active attention of my Department in collaboration with the other interests involved. It will probably be found desirable to provide two groups of schools for the area. For one of these a site is available and for the other I am hoping that a site will be made available in the near future. I am aware of the urgent necessity for completing the necessary preliminaries and it may be taken that my Department will leave nothing undone in this connection.

Mr. Byrne

Will the Minister take steps to see that the cost of the sites will not be prohibitive to the parish manager? Does the Minister not see that he and those providing the houses should be given, especially in a new area, a site for schools free of charge, so as not to impose an extra increased burden in the local added areas, where they are very small parishes?

The Deputy did not ask for free sites in the question.
