Vol. 125 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Turf Workers—Additional Rations.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will arrange to have additional rations of tea and sugar made available to Bord na Móna employees, county council employees and workers employed by private producers on turf production schemes in County Kerry.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply given in Dáil Éireann on the 13th March, 1951, to a somewhat similar question in which I indicated that I could find no reason for making such special additional concessions to turf workers as are now suggested by the Deputy.

Is the Minister aware that several applications have been sent from these districts to his Department? Will the Minister undertake to have the matter investigated and reexamined especially in view of the large number of men who will be engaged in the turf production effort in the present season? I am willing to submit the additional information which the Minister states he has not had in his Department.

While heretofore when special concessions were made the ration of tea was ½ oz. per head, at the present moment the ration of tea is 2 oz. per head, and there is a legal and open market for tea outside that. However this matter is under constant review and it will be further looked into.
