Vol. 125 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Clew Bay Causeway.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that work on a causeway between Innisnakillew Island, Clew Bay and Kilmeena, Westport, County Mayo, has been stopped; if he is further aware that the local tenants are prepared to indemnify the Office of Public Works against any actions or claims by the unreasonable objectors to this work; and if he will accordingly authorise the scheme to be proceeded with.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to his question about this proposal on 6th April, 1949. A further effort was recently made to have the scheme put in hands, but as two of the parties whose interests would be affected refused to sign the standard consent form, the work could not proceed. If the Deputy can satisfy my office that the indemnity offered will be sufficient to safeguard public funds, I shall be prepared to consider the matter without further delay.

If the Parliamentary Secretary gets an indemnity from all the tenants concerned with the exception of these two unreasonable objectors, for instance next week, is he prepared to proceed with the work?

As I have said to the Deputy, if they satisfy the office that the indemnity offered will be sufficient to safeguard public funds, the work will go on without delay.
