Vol. 126 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Valentia Transport Facilities.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that the provision of adequate travelling facilities for the people of Valentia is a matter of national policy; and, if so, whether he will provide the necessary money for the erection of a bridge from the island to the mainland at the earliest possible date.

The provision of adequate roads and bridges in any particular area is primarily a matter for the appropriate local authority. The only fund at my disposal from which a grant could be made towards the provision of a bridge connecting Valentia Island with the mainland is the Road Fund. In view of the present position and commitments of the Road Fund it is not possible at this stage to allocate any grant towards the erection of this bridge.
