Vol. 126 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Steel, Limited.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in view of the grave scarcity of sheet steel which is already causing grave unemployment in Messrs. Fords of Cork and other manufacturing industries, he will proceed immediately with the proposals to extend Irish Steel, Limited, Haulbowline, so as to put in the balance of the necessary machinery to put the sheet and rolling mills there into production at the earliest possible date.

I am aware that difficulties have arisen due to the present scarcity of sheet steel. The question of production of sheet steel by Irish Steel Holdings, Limited is under examination.

In so far as Messrs. Ford are concerned, I am informed that it is not correct that there is unemployment amongst the workers of that concern but in any event, the manufacture of sheet steel at Haulbowline would be unlikely to affect the assembly of motor vehicles.
