Vol. 126 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Transport for School Children.

asked the Minister for Education whether, in view of the excessive distance that children in the Gortdove area of Goleen have to travel to school, he will subsidise to the extent of a small grant to a local hackney man the carrying of ten to 11 children in the area to school at Goleen.

I have received no representations in regard to the question of granting aid towards the cost of a transport service for pupils attending Goleen National School, and in the absence of particulars of children who, it is stated, have to travel an excessive distance to Goleen National School, I am not in a position to say whether State aid could be granted, under the regulations, towards the cost of a transport service.

On receipt of an application from the manager, or from the interested local parties, giving the names and ages of the children, and the distance of their respective homes from Goleen National School, I will have the matter investigated.

If it is brought to the Minister's notice that, in fact, ten to 11 children between the ages of five and seven do live between three and three and a half miles from Goleen school, will he indicate whether it is possible to give a grant?

I cannot indicate that. In the latter part of my answer, the Deputy will have a clear indication of what it is necessary to do. If I have reports from the manager or from interested local parties in regard to the names and ages of the children and the distance they live from the school, I will have the matter investigated.

Those people say they have given the particulars. At any rate, I will have that done.
