Vol. 126 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Public Telephone Kiosks.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state in respect of the 12 largest towns in the Republic (excluding the county boroughs) the number of public telephone kiosks.

The number of telephone kiosks in each of the 12 largest towns, excluding the county boroughs, is as follows:—Dún Laoghaire, 10; Galway, 5: Dundalk, 4; Drogheda, 2; Sligo, 4; Wexford, 2; Bray, 5; Kilkenny, 4; Tralee, 2; Clonmel, 2; Athlone, 3; Carlow, 1.

Would the Minister agree that there is a case for balancing up in relation to some of these towns?

On examining the relationship of population to the number of kiosks I find that, while the number compares reasonably with population, in some cases kiosks were established purely for reasons of convenience. I do not think there is any great disparity but I will have the matter further examined.
