Vol. 126 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Proposed Cork Air Service.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether his Department is prepared to co-operate with the Cork airways company by providing the necessary facilities at Cork airport to enable a scheduled air service to be operated from Cork.

The provision of regular air services from Cork is a matter to which I propose to give consideration but it is likely to be some time before a final decision can be reached.

The present position is that an airfield has been provided and is being operated at Farmer's Cross, Cork, by private interests, and a licence has been issued authorising the use of that airfield by aircraft plying for hire subject to certain conditions. The airfield is being used for private and charter flights.

Before the operation of regular services from this airport could be authorised it would be necessary, in the interests of safety, to set up a meteorological organisation there. This is not at present practicable because of a shortage of forecasting staff, some difficulty having already been experienced in obtaining sufficient trained personnel for Dublin and Shannon airports. This is one of the factors which will have to be taken into account when the general question is under consideration.
