Vol. 126 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Salary Arrears.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will indicate when it is proposed to pay arrears of salary to members of the Garda Síochána and the date from which such payments will be commenced.

Mr. Boland

Payment of arrears of salary to members of the Garda Síochána cannot commence until a revised pay Order embodying the new rates of pay is made. The arrears will be payable from the 15th January, 1951, inclusive. The work of preparing the new pay Order is being expedited as much as possible.

In view of the fact that many of these men are going on holidays in the near future, would it be possible to make some arrangement whereby they could get a "sub" in advance to aid them?

Mr. Boland

There is this difference between the wages of civil servants and Guards, that there must be a pay Order. That is a rather involved business. I can assure the Deputy that every effort is being made to get payments made as quickly as possible.

I am not anxious to take the Minister at a disadvantage. I was wondering if there was some way whereby a "sub" would be made available to these people in lieu of money coming to them so that they would have it for the holiday period.

Mr. Boland

I am afraid there is not.
