Vol. 126 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Kerry Labourers' Cottages.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware of the dissatisfaction felt by the people of Kerry in regard to the selection of tenants for labourers' cottages by the county manager; and, if so, whether he is prepared to investigate the matter at an early date.

I am not aware of any general dissatisfaction in regard to the letting of cottages in County Kerry, but if the Deputy will supply particulars of specific lettings which he considers should be investigated, the matter will receive my attention.

Is the Minister aware that in one case a labourer applied for a cottage previously occupied by his deceased aunt and was refused the tenancy; that another labourer who had been living with his grandmother when he applied for the cottage on her decease was also refused? Is he further aware that there is political discrimination in these cases and that the people of Kerry regard the county manager as a political agent rather than the servant of the people?

That is wrong and very well you know that it is. It is a disgraceful statement to make in this House.

Is the Minister aware that it is not the county manager with whom the people of Kerry are dissatisfied but with Deputy Flynn, who is continually asking to have cottages given to his own henchmen and to have others appointed to posts in the county? The people are absolutely disgusted with what he has done recently.

He is your pal and he is working for you and not for the ratepayers of Kerry.
