Vol. 126 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Kerry Turf-generating Station.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware of the attitude of the Electricity Supply Board in regard to the proposed turf-generating station for the Cahirciveen area; and, if so, if he will request the board to have the matter re-examined with a view to having such a station provided in the area.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply given by me on 20th June, 1951, to a question on this subject. As I have informed the Dáil, the whole question of the Electricity Supply Board's future electricity generating programme is under consideration, but there are considerable practical difficulties associated with the proposal to establish a turf-burning station in South Kerry.

Is the Minister aware that, when we made representations to the Electricity Supply Board recently in regard to an extension of the Electricity Supply Board line from Killorglin to Cahirciveen, they pointed out that they would have to establish a new depot, that the volume of current was not sufficient to give that extension? Therefore, there is no option but to initiate a turf-generating station in this sector of our county.

The Deputy's question referred to a turf-burning station. Before that could be considered as part of the board's programme, it would be necessary to establish that Bord na Móna could do its share of the work.
