Vol. 126 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether the Davis holding (Pratt estate), Bally-vickmaha, Crossmolina, County Mayo, has been acquired by the Land Commission ; and, if so, when it is proposed to have these lands divided.

The proceedings for the acquisition of the Davis estate have not yet been completed. The Land Commission expect to be in a position to allot the lands towards the end of the year.

asked the Minister for Lands whether the Land Commission have considered the propriety of acquiring the lands known as the Corcoran holding (Pratt estate), situated at Bofeenaun, Ballina, County Mayo, for distribution amongst the uneconomic landholders of the district; and, if so, with what result.

The question of the resumption of the holding of the Misses Corcoran in Bofeenaun has been under consideration for some time. In view of the circumstances of the case, the Land Commission have reserved their decision for the present.

asked the Minister for Lands whether the Land Commission have considered the propriety of acquiring the lands of the late Major Pratt, Pratt estate, situated at Inishcoa, Crossmolina, County Mayo, for division amongst the uneconomic landholders and landless men of the district ; and, if so, with what result.

asked the Minister for Lands if the Land Commission have considered the propriety of acquiring the lands of Major Pratt of Inishcoa, Crossmolina, for the relief of congestion in that area ; and, if so, with what result.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take together Questions Nos. 41 and 42.

Proceedings were instituted some years ago for the acquisition of the lands of Inishcoa on the Pratt estate. The owner objected to acquisition and his objection was allowed.

asked the Minister for Lands whether the Land Commission are proceeding with the acquisition of lands belonging to Goods at Bally-mountain, Bandon, County Cork; and, if so, what is the present position regarding these lands.

The Land Commission recently acquired the estate in question.

Is the Minister in a position to say when the division will take place?

The resale scheme is in course of preparation. I am not in a position to say when it will be put into operation. At the moment, I am not able to give the Deputy that information.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will indicate the present position regarding the acquisition by the Land Commission of the Franks estate at Garretstown, Kinsale, County Cork.

The proceedings for the purchase of the lands of Garretstown and Kilmore on the Franks estate are well advanced and agreement has been reached as to price. Arrangements will be made for possession in due course.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether the Land Commission have considered the propriety of acquiring the Doorley estate at Ballyfinegan, Castlerea; and, if so, if he will ensure when these lands are acquired that the needs of the local congests are attended to before considering outside applications.

Proceedings are in progress for the acquisition of most of the lands on the Doorley estate. The claims of all applicants are always fully considered in connection with any scheme of land division and this case will be no exception.

asked the Minister for Lands if the Land Commission have considered the propriety of proceeding with the further acquisition and distribution of the Clonbrock (Dillon) estate at Ahascragh, County Galway; and, if so, with what result.

Areas of 442 acres and 697 acres on the Dillon estate were acquired last year by the Land Commission and the forestry division respectively. The Land Commission have no proceedings in respect of the balance of the estate, but they are having inquiries made to ascertain if any portions of the lands taken over by the forestry division are available and suitable for allotment purposes.

asked the Minister for Lands if the Land Commission have considered the propriety of taking early steps towards the acquisition and/or distribution of the Marlay turbary on the Grattan-Bellew estate, County Galway; and, if so, with what result.

The Land Commission have no proceedings for the acquisition of the turbary in Marlay but they are having an inspection made.

asked the Minister for Lands whether, in view of the keen demand for the acquisition and division of land in the Straffan, Kill and Ardclough areas in County Kildare, he will ask the Land Commission to reconsider their decision not to acquire for division the Broe estate situated at Reeves, Straffan, County Kildare.

The decision not to acquire the lands of Reeves on the former Broe estate was taken very recently. As it is most unlikely that there has since been any material change in the circumstances, I see no point in asking the Land Commission to reconsider the matter at this stage.
