Vol. 126 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Committal of Gardaí.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state if he has investigated the case of the attempted committal of two members of the Garda in County Mayo to a mental hospital and what action, if any, he proposes to take in the matter.

It appears from the records of my Department that this matter was the subject of a complaint by the Mayo County Council and that my predecessor, having all the facts before him at the time, decided to take no action. From my perusal of the papers I, too, am satisfied that no action is called for.

Would the Minister consider that the chief superintendent of the Gardaí in Mayo, who was responsible for this incident, is himself a normal man? Is the Minister aware that the chief superintendent of the Guards in Mayo, in a letter addressed to the secretary of the Mayo County Council which is in my possession, suggested that I was not entitled to speak freely at a meeting of the Mayo County Council? Would the Minister further consider that a chief superintendent of the Guards of that type is likely to get co-operation from the members of the Gardaí working under him?

I have gone into the papers further and I agree with the action taken by my predecessor in this matter.
