Vol. 126 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Postal and Telephone Facilities.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state when it is proposed to give a daily delivery of mail in the Kilasser, Swinford, area.

The services in those areas of the Swinford-Kilasser postal districts which have a restricted frequency of delivery are at present operated at a loss. With the existing organisation of the services it would not be possible to increase the frequency without adding substantially to the loss.

The provision of increased frequency will, however, be considered when the services in the Claremorris district are being examined in accordance with the Department's plans for the reorganisation of postal services generally throughout the country. It is not possible to say at this stage when the examination of the Claremorris district will be completed.

I should like to ask the Minister does he consider that a threeday per week delivery in a remote area is anything like a satisfactory service?

The Deputy must be aware that I have already made a complete statement on the question of postal delivery services. This is a matter that will be dealt with as sympathetically as possible.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state if he has caused any survey to be made into the public telephone requirements of the thousands of residents in the newly-built housing schemes at Ballinanty-Beg, Ballinacurra, Weston and Prospect housing schemes, in Limerick City; and, if not, whether he will have the matter attended to without delay.

It is normal practice to consider the public telephone requirements of all newly developed housing areas and those named in Limerick City have received attention.

The telephone facilities available to the residents of those housing estates at post offices and in street kiosks are considered sufficient at present, but the position will be further reviewed at an early date.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will consider favourably the erection of a telephone kiosk at Headford, County Galway.

I have considered the question of providing a telephone kiosk at Headford, County Galway, and I regret to find that the erection of one there is not warranted at present.

Is the Minister aware that Headford is a growing town situate on the main road from County Mayo to the City of Galway and that it is visited by many tourists during the fishing season? If he would look into the matter, perhaps he could find it possible to provide these telephone facilities at an early date.

The matter cannot be examined at an early date as, on the basis of the estimated receipts, the revenue from such a kiosk would fall far short of the annual charge of £35 per year.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state when it is his intention to have a telephone installed at a convenient place for the people of Moygownagh, Crossmolina.

A public telephone will be installed at Garranard Post Office within the next nine months. It will serve the Moygownagh area.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state when it is his intention to have a telephone installed at Callow sub-post office, Foxford.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state when it is his intention to have a telephone installed at Attymas sub-post office, Ballina.

With your permission, I propose to take Questions Nos. 93 and 94 together.

Callow and Attymas post offices will be provided with a telephone under the rural call office programme. They are not among the 137 places selected for attention this year and it is not possible to say when they will be reached.
