Vol. 126 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Rehabilitation Project.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware of the failure of the land rehabilitation project in so far as the provision of water supplies to farmers are concerned; and, if so, whether he will amend this scheme so that pumps can be erected for groups of farmers residing in rural districts.

Mr. Walsh

I am not so aware, but in any event the provision of public water supplies is a matter for the local authorities.

Is the Minister aware that it was suggested that the Minister for Agriculture and the Minister for Local Government would co-operate with a view to making water supplies available for farmers in rural districts? If that is so and if no progress has been made in regard to it, will the Minister reconsider that aspect of the matter?

Mr. Walsh

The erection of pumps or the sinking of wells is a matter for the county councils and generally it is based on the reports of the county medical officer of health. In any event, county councils are entitled to a free grant of over 40 per cent. for the erection of pumps. In addition to that, they can get loans on a long-term basis, so that really it would be a matter for the county council.
