Vol. 127 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - New Ross Handball Alley.

asked the Minister for Finance what grant will be made towards the erection of a handball alley at New Ross; and, further, if he will state when approval to the project will be given by him.

The only funds at my disposal from which a grant could be made available for a scheme of this nature are those to provide work for unemployment assistance recipients. The amount available for a particular area is proportionate to the number of such men in the area concerned in relation to the country as a whole, and the scheme selected must have an adequate unskilled labour content.

The original proposal submitted was not considered to be suitable as an employment scheme in view of its high cost and limited unskilled labour content. Further information in respect of the proposal has been received in my Office within the last few days and is being examined in the light of the requirements mentioned.

There will be a quick decision I expect.
