Vol. 127 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - State Paper Office.

asked the Taoiseach if he will consider withdrawing the restriction that requires research workers who avail themselves of material from the Irish State Papers Office to refrain from publicising the names of informers and Government agents who were in conspiracy against national movements up to 6th December, 1922.

I am not prepared to withdraw the conditions that are imposed in cases in which applications for permission to inspect documents in the State Paper Office are granted. The conditions include the following:—

(1) that all notes and manuscripts are submitted to the officer in charge of the office; and

(2) that, in the case of any document reflecting unfavourably on an individual, the name of both the writer of the document and the individual concerned are omitted.

These conditions have been imposed over a considerable period of years and were designed in the public interest—which, in my opinion, they continue to serve.
