Vol. 127 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sanatorium Workers' Sick Leave.

asked the Minister for Health whether he is aware that the former practice of allowing the outdoor workers at Newcastle Sanatorium, County Wicklow, six months' sick leave on full pay was suspended in or about May, 1950, and that they are now only allowed two weeks at full pay and two weeks at half-pay; and further, in view of the fact that the six months' leave with full pay is still enjoyed by the indoor workers at the sanatorium, if he will take steps to restore this right to the outdoor workers without delay.

As the institution to which the Deputy refers is not under the control of a local authority, I have no functions in relation to the terms of appointment and conditions of service of those employed at the institution, which are matters solely for the consideration of the board of governors.

Am I to understand that no contribution from public funds is made for the upkeep of these institutions?

There is a contribution.

In the light of the fact that there is a contribution, does the Minister disclaim all responsibility——

So far the Minister for Health has not asked the permission of the Dáil to take over the control of voluntary hospitals.

This is a handy way out of the situation.

I am not sure that I would get the support of Deputies if I asked such permission.
