Vol. 127 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Mayo Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that grave dissatisfaction is felt by the vast majority of the residents in Kilmovee, County Mayo, as a result of the decision of the Land Commission not to vest any portion of the Horkan estate in Mr. Thomas Sheridan, on whose behalf these persons presented a petition to the Land Commission; and, if so, whether the Land Commission will reconsider their decision.

In this case the entire area of 45½ acres available was used to enlarge eight uneconomic holdings and to provide a parcel for a former employee on the estate. Mr. Sheridan's application was fully considered in conjunction with the claims of 47 other eligible persons, but it was inevitable that most of the claims could not be satisfied. All the lands on the estate have been allotted.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that the Land Commission have refused to acquire a holding of land containing about 40 acres at Kilbrogan, Aghamore, County Mayo; and, if so, whether he has satisfied himself that the decision is just, in view of the serious congestion in the locality and the fact that the owner of the holding, who resides in County Louth, has an adequate living from his own trade.

The position is not as indicated in the first part of the question. The Land Commission have taken no decision regarding the acquisition of these lands but are having inquiries made.
