Vol. 127 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Expansion of Beet Sugar Production.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in view of his statement on 7th instant, column 310, Official Reports, that the Government contemplated the possibility of expanding the output of sugar, he will make representations to Comhlucht Siúicre Éireann, Teo., to have an extra sugar beet factory established at New Ross.

I have, at present, under discussion with Comhlucht Siúicre Éireann the expansion of beet sugar production, but I cannot undertake to say that such expansion will be carried out by the erection of a new factory at New Ross or elsewhere.

Is it proposed to increase production in the existing factories?

I would not like to suggest that a final decision has been made, but the information I have seen to date would suggest that that would be far more economical than any other course.

The question of building an additional factory is not under consideration? Will it be considered?

So far as the Government are concerned, they would be very largely guided by the advice they get from the Sugar Company.

Is the Minister aware of the disapproval voiced as regards the sugar factories by the Banking Commission in 1938?

I do not remember that.
