Vol. 127 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unused Córas Iompair Éireann Tickets.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that Córas Iompair Éireann refuse to allow any refund, or to extend the date of expiry of unused weekly and monthly tickets held by people travelling between Cork City and County; and, if so, whether he is prepared to make representations to the company regarding the abolition of this practice.

This is not a matter in which I have any official function. I am informed, however, by Córas Iompair Éireann that while the board does not extend the date of expiry of unused season tickets, refunds are allowed in certain circumstances. The conditions upon which tickets, including season tickets, are issued are contained in a publication issued by Córas Iompair Éireann which is available to members of the travelling public free of charge at any of the board's depots or booking offices.

In view of the fact that, in a recent case which I can submit to the Minister, a person in possession of a monthly ticket was unable to use it even for three weeks owing to illness and that, although medical certificates were furnished, the company refused either to allow an extension of the date or a refund, I ask the Minister if he will make representations to the company in the matter so that we can have a clear understanding with regard to their liability?

I think the Deputy would find it more useful to take the matter up directly with the company. I have no function in the matter, but I am informed that they do allow a refund in certain cases.

Further to the Minister's reply, I have already done so and they have refused. That is the fact. I have asked the Minister now only as a last resort.
