Vol. 127 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rural Electrification.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if it is the intention of the Electricity Supply Board to take steps to provide the Cootehall area, Roscommon, with electric current in the near future.

I am informed by the Electricity Supply Board that no request has been received from any representative committee of residents in the Cootehall area for the extension of supply to that area. I understand that, in view of the large number of applications for supply which are continually being received, it is the board's practice to confine its efforts to those areas where the results of local canvasses, undertaken by local committees in the first instance, give a reasonably favourable indication that the householders in question are anxious and willing to take supply.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that in the Beaufort area, County Kerry, extending from the Killorglin boundary to Aghadoe, Killarney, the Electricity Supply Board made an official canvass last May, and that there was a 79 per cent. acceptance in connection with a rural electrification scheme; and, if so, whether he will state if it is definite now that the scheme will be put into operation as expeditiously as possible, and what exactly is the present position with regard to the matter.

I am informed by the Electricity Supply Board that the Beaufort area will be considered for selection towards the end of the year. It is not possible to indicate at this stage whether or not the area will then qualify for selection.
