Vol. 127 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Building and Repair of Piers.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will enumerate the conditions under which his Department allocates grants for the erection, extension and repair of piers and slips in County Kerry or elsewhere.

Apart from cases of a special kind, I have no responsibility for the provision or improvement of minor marine works, but I am prepared to allocate a limited number of grants from the Employment and Emergency Schemes Vote for approved works which form suitable subjects for the relief of unemployment.

For many years past, the conditions attached to grants for this purpose have been as follows:—

(1) that the expenditure is justified by the unemployment position in the area;

(2) that the execution of the work is certified as necessary or desirable by the Department concerned with fishery and agricultural requirements;

(3) that the council of the county concerned contribute 25 per cent. of the cost of the works and undertake to maintain them on completion.
