Vol. 127 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing Inspectors.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he will indicate the number of inspectors operating in County Cork under the housing grants section of his Department; and further, if he has satisfied himself that the present number of inspectors is adequate to deal with the work.

There are at present two housing inspectors operating in County Cork for housing grants purposes. One of these operates also in County Kerry.

I am satisfied that they can cope adequately with the volume of work on hands.

Is the Minister aware that the inspector in West Cork died recently and the other inspector has been doing the work in that area? Is he further aware that a large number of applicants are awaiting inspection? I realise fully that one man is doing more than one man's work but I believe there is quite a volume of work outstanding because there are not enough inspectors in the area.

I have gone into this matter very fully. While I am anxious to ensure that there will be no undue delay, I have satisfied myself that the number of applications pending inspection is not unduly large and would not represent more than about three weeks' work for two men. I think the position is reasonable as it is. We keep the position under review and from time to time a temporary man is sent out if the amount of arrears warrants that.
