Vol. 127 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing Schemes.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether an application from the Cork County Council (South Cork Health Services) requesting approval of a site at Carrigaline, County Cork, for the building of 22 houses has been received in his Department; and, if so, if he will indicate the decision reached.

A Compulsory Purchase Order submitted by the Cork County Council for the acquisition of housing sites including a site for 22 houses at Carrigaline has been confirmed by me with certain modifications. The Carrigaline site was excluded from the Order as being unsuitable for a housing scheme.

Will the Minister state why the Carrigaline site has been rejected?

I never saw the site myself, but I take it that those who did, and who are competent to judge, had no reason for rejecting the site other than that they regarded it as unsuitable.

Is the Minister aware that the architect, one of the most competent in the South of Ireland and employed by the Cork County Council, passed it as a suitable site? If so, will the Minister state why the differentiation in his Department against the recommendation of the local architect?

The Minister is aware that doctors differ.

With the permission of the Chair, I propose to raise this matter on the Adjournment to-night.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the present position in regard to housing schemes proposed for the following places in County Limerick: (a) Drumcollogher, (b) Adare, (c) Shanagolden, and (d) Mungret.

The position in regard to the schemes referred to by the Deputy is as follows:—

(a) Drumcollogher: The county council proposed to acquire a site outside the village for a scheme of 12 unserviced cottages. The council have been requested to consider the acquisition of sites in the village where a piped water supply is available and where the erection of houses would add to the amenities and appearance of the village. I understand that this suggestion is being considered.

(b) Adare: I am informed that the council are negotiating for a site to accommodate 16 houses estimated to be required to meet the needs of the village.

(c) Shanagolden: The council are endeavouring to secure a site for a scheme of six houses which, it is estimated, will meet the needs of the village.

(d) Mungret: Tenders for a scheme of eight houses have been received by the council and are at present being examined by them.
