Vol. 127 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unprotected Waterways.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the many fatal accidents that have occurred by reason of cars being driven into the Liffey and other unprotected waterways and, having regard to the suggestions put forward by the City Coroner at a recent inquest, he will take steps to ensure that suitable protective measures are adopted to safeguard road users.

There are considerable technical difficulties in determining the most suitable and practicable protective measures to safeguard road users during period of low visibility in areas such as the quays east of Butt Bridge where shipping activities normally require the quays to be kept open for the discharge of cargo and the loading of lorries. I understand, however, that the question is being examined by the Dublin Corporation and the Dublin Port and Docks Board.

Will the Minister take steps to ensure that similar protective measures are adopted in other areas apart from the City of Dublin, because accidents of this kind are liable to happen anywhere the pier is unprotected?

This is a direct question referring to a specific place and I do not know what other areas the Deputy has in mind.

Baltinglass probably.
