Vol. 128 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Enforcement of Food Regulations.

asked the Minister for Health whether he is aware that the enforcement of the proposed food regulations in regard to shops will impose very heavy expenditure on the part of many shopkeepers in addition to a possible increase in valuation; and, if so, whether he will consider amending the proposed regulations in such a way that these hardships will be avoided.

I do not think it is likely that the enforcement of the Food Hygiene Regulations, 1950, will impose very heavy expenditure on many shopkeepers. Expense will, of necessity, be incurred by the proprietors of some premises which will require improvement for the purpose of compliance with the regulations. Health authorities have been advised that extensive alterations to premises or elaborate equipment should not be required, except where absolutely essential.
