Vol. 129 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Contracts for Carpets.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state whether it is a fact that contracts have been placed recently with a firm in Carlisle for the supply of carpets to Dublin Castle and to the Office of the Minister for External Affairs; and, if so, if he will state why such contracts were placed outside the country in view of the Government's declared policy of reducing unnecessary imports.

asked the Minister for Finance if it is a fact that an order for carpets for Dublin Castle and Iveagh House has been placed with an English firm; and, if so, if he will state the reasons why this order was not placed with an Irish firm of carpet manufacturers.

I propose to answer Questions Nos. 44 and 45 together.

Contracts have been placed with Messrs. Morton Sundour Fabrics Limited, whose headquarters are at Carlisle, for the supply of Irish handmade carpets for the State apartments, Dublin Castle, and the Department of External Affairs, Iveagh House. The carpets are being manufactured in the company's factory at Killybegs, County Donegal.
