Vol. 129 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Erection of Jetty at Arranmore Island.

asked the Minister for Finance if, in view of the urgent necessity for the erection of a jetty to the north-east of Leabgarrow Pier, Arranmore Island, County Donegal, he will ensure that the work is commenced forthwith.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to his question of the 21st November, 1951, on this matter, to which at present I have nothing further to add.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that for a period of three weeks of this year a motor boat could not land on the north-east of Leabgarrow pier? In fact it could not land at the pier at all. Is the Parliamentary Secretary further aware that four lives were practically lost there for want of a small jetty to the north-east of that pier?

I am not so aware, but I am aware that numerous difficulties similar to those experienced at Leabgarrow pier were experienced in other places too. Leabgarrow was not overlooked altogether since in 1946-47 there was an extension to the pier and improvements carried out at a cost of £2,200, towards which cost a grant of 75 per cent. was sanctioned from the Employment and Emergency Schemes Vote.

£150 would do the job now.

Why was it not done during the three years?

Will the Parliamentary Secretary take into consideration now the statement made by a responsible Deputy that some lives were nearly lost?

Practically lost, yes.
