Vol. 129 No. 1

Written Answers. - Pipes for Land Drainage.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will alter the regulations of the land rehabilitation project so as to permit farmers to make their own drains and also so as to make available to the farmers the necessary pipes for this purpose in view of the fact that the project, as at present operated, is going ahead too slowly, and that if the changes suggested were made the farmer could do the work in the slack season now obtaining.

Mr. Walsh

There is no necessity to alter the provisions of the land project to achieve the purpose referred to in the question. Under the project it is optional for a farmer to carry out the drainage work necessary on his own farm, at the season most suitable to him, subject to prior departmental approval for the work proposed.

It is not possible to arrange for supplies of pipes to farmers from stocks held by my Department. To do so would quickly exhaust existing stocks which are required for work being carried out for farmers under the land project. A certain quantity of both clay and concrete pipes is already being manufactured in this country. Production is being gradually expanded and it is hoped that within a reasonable time ample supplies will be available to meet farmers' orders.
