Vol. 129 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Disemployment of Turf Workers.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the reasons why 23 men who have been employed by Bord na Móna at Tullyard Bog, County Donegal, for the past three years have now been paid off.

I am informed by Bord na Móna that the number of men employed on the bog at Tullyard, Glenties, County Donegal, during the summer and autumn of 1951 was higher than in the previous year and when the normal harvesting operations by the board terminated it was unavoidable that a number of employees should be laid off. The board point out, however, that the employment position is little different from what it was about a year ago. In the week ended 14th December, 1951, after men had been laid off, exactly the same number of men was employed as in the corresponding week in 1950 and in the week ended 11th January, 1952, 33 men were employed as compared with 36 men in the corresponding week of 1951. I am also informed that there is no work available on the bog for a larger number of men as the maximum number is employed in the development work still to be carried out. Glenties bog has gone into production and there is little development work remaining to be done. When it becomes necessary to discharge workers they are offered alternative employment on other bogs operated by Bord na Móna.
