Vol. 129 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shannon Flooding.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that the people resident in the Clonown area, County Roscommon, annually suffer severe hardship and losses due to the serious flooding by the Shannon of their houses and holdings; and, if so, whether he will request the Land Commission to direct their attention to the urgent necessity for investigating this problems and to making available elsewhere suitable holdings for persons who are anxious and willing to leave the district.

I am aware that periodic flooding occurs in the Clonown area. The removal of farmers from flooded areas is not a function of the Land Commission, save in so far as the question may impinge on their land settlement proposals for the relief of congestion. In the event of suitable land becoming available, it may be possible to migrate some of the landholders from the flooded area in question as part of a normal land settlement scheme. It is hoped to initiate a survey of this area shortly with a view to ascertaining, in consultation with other Departments, what can be done to ameliorate conditions.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state when a scheme for the division of the Coffey estate (Record No. S.9787), County Roscommon, is likely to be put into operation.

As the proceedings for the acquisition of this estate have not been completed, it is not possible to state when the lands are likely to be allotted.
