Vol. 129 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Naturalisation Certificates.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the number of persons to whom certificates of naturalisation have been issued in the years 1946 to 1951, inclusive; and the number of such persons who have since emigrated to countries other than Great Britain.

The number of persons to whom certificates of naturalisation were issued in the years 1946 to 1951, inclusive, was 656. I am not in a position to give the number of naturalised persons who have emigrated, as naturalised persons are not registered and there is no control of passenger traffic out of the State.

Can the Minister say whether before issuing these certificates the gentlemen or ladies concerned are asked to give any indication of the purpose for which they are seeking citizenship here? In other words do they indicate, when they are coming over here with their pockets bulging with British Treasury notes, that they are not going to buy up and reconquer the land of this country, land taken over by the Land Commission in some cases?

That is a separate question.
